FloodNet and Flood Watch

Client: New York University, Cornell, New York Sea Grant
Year: 2022-2023
Project Scope: Community engagement, data anlysis, UX research, Local flood report design + automation

Neighborhood flood reports bring quantitative and qualitative flood data from two sources together; Flood Net and Flood Watch. These sensor detections of street-level water, and human reporting of flood observations are combined with additional data such as 311 complaints, coastal or tidal flooding and street flooding due to stormwater in local neighborhood reports that are automatically updated every 6 months. Studio 2263 led multiple rounds of community engagement sessions to learn about the community members’ understanding of the report designs and to hear about the ways the community wants to tell the story of flooding in their neighborhoods. Their input has informed the development of these local reports that will be accessible to the public on a future FloodNet website for advocacy and reporting to the media and elected officials. This project is led by a team of scientists from NYU, Cornell and CUNY
